Posting Videos: YouTube vs. Facebook

YouTube

Advantages:

  • this is the first place people go to search for videos.
  • videos are searchable using keywords.
  • because it's a Google product it can rank on search engines.
  • which makes it a great tool for online branding.

Cons:

  • your content has to be really good to get noticed.
  • it's a saturated market place so keywords have to be well thought of to be visible.
  • all elements from the background music all the way to the subject matter has to be all original.  These guys
  • mean business when it comes to copyright so it's best to read up on their policy.
  • has minimal effect when posted on FB to generate page "Likes".

Facebook

Advantages:

  • has a strong tendency to go viral. Not really sure why but I've conducted several tests and videos out perform photos in terms of sharing mileage by a long shot!
  • copyright policies aren't as strict but it is still best to read up on it and be on the safe side
  • promoting is a no-brainer, tagging your friends is all there is to it. From a more technical stand  point- you are aggressively generating interest instead targeting a niche.
  • very effective in promoting fan pages.

Cons:

  • basing on observation alone, the video will not rank on search engines.
  • cannot be keyword optimized.
  • cannot be searched through keywords even from within the social network.
